Hello.
This is Vibe Plastic Surgery.
Cartilages frequently used in rhinoplasty include
ear cartilage, autologous cartilage, and donated rib cartilage.
During consultations at our clinic, we often see patients
who have a purely negative perception of donated rib cartilage.
Therefore, today we would like to explain
the pros and cons of donated rib cartilage.
What is Donated Rib Cartilage?
Literally, it refers to rib cartilage donated by a human.
It is a material that has been harvested from a human body
and thoroughly chemically treated so that it can be
safely implanted into another human body.
Because it undergoes rigorous processing
to prevent any issues within your body, the chances of it
causing immunological problems are virtually zero.
Reasons for Using Donated Rib Cartilage
✔ When both ear and septal cartilage have been depleted due to multiple surgeries
✔ When the amount of septal cartilage is insufficient
✔ When the septal cartilage is deviated
✔ When both the ear and septal cartilage are too weak
✔ When the patient does not want scarring on their own body
Many people think that using donated rib cartilage
will unconditionally lead to warping.
This is not true.
We use cartilage that has already completed its deformation process
and carve it into a flat state for the surgery, so you do not need to worry much.

Advantages of Donated Rib Cartilage
It has the advantage of being much larger and
sturdier than ear or septal cartilage.
Additionally, when using autologous rib cartilage,
patients often worry about
scarring or physical burden, but with donated rib cartilage,
the surgery is performed using donated material,
so there is no burden regarding scarring.
Because rib cartilage can be absorbed and is quite hard, it is difficult to carve,
and it may have a slightly higher risk of inflammation compared to other autologous tissues.
However, to elevate and lengthen a short nose,
surgery must be performed using firm rib cartilage
to achieve satisfactory results.

Are the Side Effects of Donated Rib Cartilage Severe?

If the nose is elevated excessively, if the patient smokes,
or in cases of multiple revision surgeries,
blood circulation can be impaired,
which may slightly increase the risk of inflammation.
Additionally, a higher absorption rate could cause the nasal tip to drop,
resulting in a shape different from what was expected.
However, in most cases, using donated rib cartilage
does not cause any problems.
That being said, if you proceed with a surgery that is
too excessive for your baseline conditions,
or if you continue to smoke,
the probability of unwanted side effects
can increase, so you must be careful.

Because everyone's nasal condition and preferred features are different,
we cannot say that one specific implant is the absolute best.
Therefore, to achieve satisfactory results,
you must understand your own needs
and find the appropriate surgical method
by having a thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon
before proceeding with the surgery.
